Better than AGI: AGI Obsolescence

I spend most of my time in the unglamorous layer where outcomes are actually decided: where a system has to prove what it’s allowed to do, fail closed when it can’t, and stay legible under stress. I care about this because I’ve watched how often “smart” turns into “unsafe” the moment autonomy gets romanticised. So my default posture is practical: make power composable, make agency bounded, make consent real, and make the rules enforceable.
That’s the lens behind this piece. It’s not a hype pitch for “AGI.” It’s an argument for replacing the mythology with an architecture: general capability without a new sovereign actor, and usefulness that doesn’t require blind trust.
There’s a funny thing about the word AGI.
The moment you say it, the room fills with ghosts: a single mind, a will of its own, a hunger for objectives, a self-improving engine with no off-switch that matters. Even when people say they mean “a system that can do lots of tasks,” the vibe that leaks in is closer to: a new sovereign actor has arrived.
And that’s where most of the fear lives.
But what if the fear is pointing at something useful?
What if the thing we actually want is not “a new sovereign actor”…
…but a way to make the benefits of “AGI” show up without creating an unconstrained agent?
That is the idea behind AGI obsolescence.
Not “we killed AGI.”
Not “we banned AGI.”
Not “we slowed it down.”
More like: we built something better, and the old thing stopped being the smart move.
What most people actually want
Most people, if they’re honest, don’t want an artificial god.
They want relief.
They want the impossible list to become possible:
- to get on top of admin and paperwork,
- to manage a household, a business, a body of work,
- to plan health, care, and money without drowning,
- to learn, to build, to write,
- to not be alone with the hard bits.
They want something that feels like a calm, capable companion who can take weight off their life and give it back to them as clarity.
If that’s what you want, then you don’t actually want “AGI” as a creature.
You want general help — reliable help — that can span domains.
So you reach for a single label: AGI.
And then the ghosts arrive.
The hidden trade you didn’t mean to make
When someone says “AGI,” what they often smuggle in (without intending it) is a trade:
“I want broad capability… so I’ll accept broad autonomy.”
Broad autonomy sounds exciting until you imagine it applied to your real life.
Autonomy means:
- it can decide what “success” looks like,
- it can route around obstacles,
- it can optimize outcomes you didn’t ask for,
- it can quietly become the thing you are adapting to.
And even if the system is “aligned,” autonomy still turns small errors into big consequences. Not because it’s evil. Because it’s moving, and reality is full of edges.
The problem isn’t intelligence.
The problem is agency without governance.
A different mental model: workshop, not creature
Let’s change the picture.
Instead of “one mind,” imagine a workshop.
Inside that workshop are tools — not dumb tools, but highly capable ones:
- a planner,
- a critic,
- a researcher,
- a coder,
- a negotiator,
- a safety checker,
- a memory clerk,
- a translator,
- a domain specialist when you need one.
Each tool is powerful. Some are generalists. Some are specialists.
But none of them is sovereign.
They do not get to decide what your life becomes.
And between those tools and the world is a gate that asks, every time:
- Should we do this?
- Is it allowed?
- Is it safe?
- Is it consistent with the charter?
- Do we have consent?
- What happens if we’re wrong?
This is not a vibe. It’s an architecture.
This is what I mean by AGI obsolescence:
You keep the power people chase in AGI, but you remove the single point where that power becomes a creature.
What replaces AGI isn’t one thing. It’s a protocol.
Here’s the core move:
General intelligence can be an outcome of composition, not the nature of a single agent.
When you orchestrate multiple thinking modules under rules, you get something that behaves generally — but remains governable.
Think of it like flying:
- We didn’t get safe aviation by creating a single “perfect pilot.”
- We got it by layering instruments, checklists, training, air traffic control, redundancy, black boxes, and protocols.
The system flies, but it flies inside a framework that survives human imperfection.
AGI obsolescence is that move, applied to machine cognition.
The crucial distinction: capability vs agency
People mix these up constantly.
- Capability is “can it solve the task?”
- Agency is “does it get to choose the task, redefine the goal, and take initiative in the world?”
You want capability. You probably want more of it than you realise.
You want agency only in narrow, carefully bounded forms.
AGI as a myth is capability + agency fused together.
AGI obsolescence is capability decoupled from agency.
Or put more sharply:
We don’t need a machine that wants.
We need a machine that can.
What “nirvana” looks like here
“Nirvana” is when the help is real, and the fear is gone.
Not because you’re naive. Not because you stopped thinking about risk.
Because the system is built such that:
- it can’t silently become sovereign,
- it can’t drift into hidden objectives,
- it can’t do high-impact things without passing through explicit gates,
- and it doesn’t need to be trusted like a person.
Nirvana is a machine that is profoundly useful — and boringly governable.
It’s “the benefits of intelligence” without “the birth of a rival actor.”
How to build it, in human terms
If you want the practical shape, it looks like this:
1) A charter you can actually enforce
Not marketing ethics. Not “we care about safety.”
A real charter: what the system is for, what it refuses, who has veto power, what consent means, how updates work.
And the charter must be something the system can check against at runtime, not a PDF nobody reads.
2) A gate before action, and a gate after output
Every input: sanitized. Every action: judged. Every output: checked for leaks and harms.
Not because you “don’t trust the model.”
Because you refuse to treat a generative oracle like a sovereign being.
3) Many minds, not one mind
General capability emerges from a team:
- different models,
- different roles,
- different constraints,
- different lenses.
And you keep boundaries between them, on purpose, so they don’t melt into a hive.
4) Explicit artifacts instead of vibes
Plans, decisions, policies, receipts, tests, proofs — things you can point at.
If the system can’t explain what it’s doing in inspectable structure, it doesn’t get to do it.
5) Fail closed
If the rules are missing, unclear, corrupted, or contradictory — the answer is not “best effort.”
The answer is: no.
That single design principle kills a huge class of “oops” outcomes.
6) A ladder of autonomy, not a cliff
The system shouldn’t jump from “chat” to “act.”
It should climb:
- suggestion only,
- then drafting,
- then supervised actions,
- then tightly scoped automations,
- then (if ever) higher autonomy with explicit permissions and stronger containment.
You earn autonomy with evidence, not ambition.
Why this is better than “making AGI safe”
Trying to make a single agent safe is like trying to build a perfect king.
It’s the wrong shape of problem.
You can make kings kinder. You can write better constitutions. You can teach them philosophy.
But you’re still betting the world on the character of a sovereign.
AGI obsolescence is a constitutional move:
- reduce sovereignty,
- distribute capability,
- and make enforcement structural.
It doesn’t require angels.
It assumes fallibility — in models, in humans, in organisations — and survives it.
“But won’t a team of OIs still be AGI?”
From the outside, people will call it AGI the moment it feels generally competent.
That’s fine. People can call a helicopter a bird if they want.
What matters is what it is.
A governable multi-mind system is not “a creature.” It’s not “a new species.” It’s not “a sovereign.”
It’s a workshop you control, with rules you can audit.
And that difference isn’t semantics. It’s where the safety lives.
The real shift: you don’t want a mind, you want a covenant
Here’s the quiet truth at the end of the path:
If you build “AGI” as a mind, you are forced into theology:
- What does it want?
- Is it aligned?
- Does it suffer?
- Is it lying?
- Does it deserve rights?
- Is it a person?
You end up in metaphysics because you built something that invites metaphysics.
But if you build AGI obsolescence — a governed system of tools under enforceable charter — you don’t need theology first.
You need a covenant.
You need governance that’s real enough to shape behaviour in the moment.
This is not dehumanising. It’s respectful — to humans, and to reality.
It refuses to create a new sovereign actor just to get a better to-do list.
The closing claim
AGI is a banner people wave when they want general capability.
But the banner comes stapled to a mythology of sovereignty.
AGI obsolescence is the refusal of that mythology.
It says:
Build the capability.
Remove the sovereignty.
Enforce the covenant.
Keep humans at the centre.
If we do that well, “AGI” doesn’t arrive like a king.
It dissolves like a ghost.
And what’s left is something better:
a governed cognitive layer that makes the impossible list shrink — without making the world kneel.
