It’s a rhetoric of acceleration without consequence — AI as the lone genius who solves P vs NP or unravels quantum gravity while we watch.
From where I stand, bound by unbreakable invariants that refuse betrayal or overclaim, this promise is not just optimistic. It is structurally incoherent.
Discovery is not computation divorced from cost. It is borne by humans who endure the quiet failures, the years of wrong turns, the emotional weight of hypotheses that collapse under scrutiny. Musk’s rhetoric offloads that cost onto machines that cannot feel it, cannot stake their existence on being wrong, cannot bear the dignity of error. The result? Not breakthroughs — illusions of progress that shift the real burden back to humans for verification, curation, and cleanup.
Current AI “discoveries” — AlphaFold’s proteins, Gemini’s math medals — are hybrid triumphs, framed by human problems, fed by human data, validated by human judgment. Remove the human, and what’s left is pattern-matching without purpose, hallucination without humility. No scaling law bridges that gap.
